I recently visited a restaurant that turned out to be so much more than just a place to eat. There, I learned about the Malay word “Ulam”, which refers to edible leaves that are often enjoyed fresh. It reflects the essence of local heritage and simplicity. What made the experience truly special was that the restaurant does not only serve food but also teaches you how to cook it. Through their culinary classes, we explored the roots of Malaysian and Nyonya culture, learning about traditional ingredients, family recipes, and the meaning of rasa sayang. It is the idea of cooking with love and letting that love be felt in every bite. Every dish carried that warmth, from the rich lemak dishes to the delicate pie tee. Everything tasted so authentic, so homemade, and so full of heart. It was not just delicious; it was soulful. This experience reminded me that great cooking is not only about skill or ingredients but also about the love you pour into it. 💛

Lili was a great teacher, weaving in stories about Peranakan culture and sharing her knowledge of traditional Malaysian herbs right out of her garden. We had such a great time, the dishes were satisfying and yet light and we finished in the early afternoon allowing us to get on with rest of the day. Highly recommended including as a gift for a fun activity - our classmate was gifted this class for his birthday. We will definitely be adding some of the recipes to our cafe’s menu in Bali🌱💚 Aishah @nadifarmcafe

Celebrated a farewell with a twist - Nasi Ulam with asam pedas ikan bawal, telur goreng and pucuk paku masak lemak Nyonya style. The twist- you have to prepare your own 9 ulam - slice them thin to a perfection (din’t want to choke them) with LOVE, and yes, the LOVE really added extra taste to the Nasi Ulam. We really had a great time learning about history of Nyonya cooking from Lily (thannksss Lily) and will definitely come again and prepare the Nasi Ulam. By the way, air tebu was so fresh 😊
