I went on a weekend and the place was surprisingly peaceful, with plenty of space to relax by the lake. Great spot for fishing and kayaking, and there are restaurants nearby so it’s easy to grab food after the activities. Really good place for a picnic with family as it is clean, calm and a nice escape from the city.

Was a frequent visitor to this lake in the past for kayaking activity to enjoy the peacefulness and serenity of the lake. Came to this place again after a long absence to go kayaking, only to find out that they offer stand-up paddling activity, which is surprising since not many places offer this type of activity and not at such an accessible rate (RM10/hr on weekdays, RM15/hr on weekends and public holidays). So I tried it out and instantly got hooked, finding myself coming back for more SUP sessions after that. At the time of writing, I visited the lake recreation centre on a weekend in the morning. There are parking spots at the centre, though not as many as the botanical garden down south (bout a 15 minute walk away). When I arrived at the centre, I was surprised to see no visitors at the centre, but was reminded that it is Ramadan and the cafe at the centre, the main driver for the crowd at this place, is closed. Normally, on weekends, this place would be packed, the cafe would be full, the fishing spots would be filled with enthusiastic anglers, groups having picnics by the lake shoreline, and the lake would be dotted with water sport enthusiasts in paddle boats, kayaks or SUPs. So for those who want to enjoy the LRC experience with lesser crowd, I believe the Ramadan period is the best time to visit. You may buy your ticket at the counter to the left of the main entrance. If you brought along your swimwear/ outdoor wear with the fear of getting wet, the restrooms have dedicated changing/ shower units for you to get changed. You may also clean yourself by showering here for free, though no shampoos or body soap are provided. To reach the boat house, follow the downward ramp to the left. From there, you get a beautiful view of the lake and its five central islands. The boat house is underneath the tent, where you need to hand your ticket to the staff to prepare the equipment for your activity. You will need to sign an indemnity form via QR before you are allowed to proceed. Afterwards, you will be handed a life vest, which is mandatory to be worn at all times when you are out on the lake. Do ensure the life vest fits you snugly, as a vest too small or too big might be awkward or uncomfortable to go on about your activity. Size charts are available for reference. If you are a first timer, the staff will teach you the basics, including paddling techniques and self-rescue if you happen to fall overboard. They will also brief you on the restricted areas that you cannot go/ trespass, so pay attention to those. You may go barefoot and leave your shoes on the rack next to the boat house. Do note that if you plan to go barefoot, you will need to endure the "foot massage" from all the rocks and pebbles at the shore of the deployment area. Otherwise, recommended that you wear shoes that you wouldn't mind getting wet. You may store your personal belongings in the locker provided at a small fee or just bring a waterproof bag. For stand-up paddling, you will have a paddle board with a leash that you need to strap around your ankle and a paddle that also comes with a leash that you need to strap to your life vest. Once you are set, you may start. For those who think SUP is hard, think again. It is much easier than you think. For those who fear falling into the water, don't be; it is part of the sport, and your life vest will keep you afloat in the water. I can't say the same for everyone, in my experience, it is very easy to stand up on the board. I've never fallen off the board in all my SUP sessions, though there were a few close calls when I was distracted looking at aquatic birds around the lake. There are lots of great photo opportunities around the lake. So, if you frequently capture photos on your smartphone, it is highly recommended that you get one of those waterproof pouches to keep your phone dry. LRC is a great place for a weekend activity, whether it is with your family, friends, partner. There's a whole list of activities to choose from depending on what you desire.
