Spent another fantastic day learning from Pearly. Her knowledge, skills and generous nature know no bounds. This was our 4th session in the last 10 years and she did not disappoint. My partner and I had arranged to meet Pearly for breakfast pre the class. She gave us options and we went for Roti for breakfast. It did not disappoint. The roti was fresh, the currys and daal were amazing, We had samosa and other items to dip I cannot remember. We were stuffed . And all for £3. Honest amazing . So let me tell you a little bit about Pearly (Pearly Kee to give her full name). She is from Penang, 5th generation Chinese and she is totally hilarious. She had me laughing all day but more about there later Turns out we were the only students today so a private class . We did a tour of the market , Pearly showed us fruits and vegetables we had not heard or seen of before . Even the ones we knew she spent time explaining how to cook them differently (her way with words made me laugh about how we cook things wrong in the west) to how we would. Pearly was very knowledgeable, but even some things she showed us she said I don't know how to cook, when she knows something she told you. The market tour was great, Pearly knew everyone and everyone knew her. We got good mornings regularly with no hassle included. Loved it and we had not even put a flame to a pot. Pearly took us for a tour in her car showing us the Beverly Hills of Penang, ex pat colonial houses mixed with money people in new developments including a castle! We got to the cooking school and were doing two dishes Laksa curry and Char Koay Trow a stir fry dish. Well what an experience! We both got to cook and eat both dishes ourselves. Pearly was great at giving advice and direction. She did a demo when required, it was one of the best, if not the best cooking class I have done. Everything I cooked was delicious! I was totally stuffed. Pearly gave great tips, when making the sauce for the laksa, everything was washed in water first, including the prawns then rinsed for ages to get rid of any slime from the prawns. The shells were used as part of the sauce, put through the blender and a sieve. What a difference to flavour. How to stir fry from scratch (cold wok) the order to do things in and how to use the spatula to cook food evenly. Brilliant Absolutely great day I loved every minute. A must do if you come here folks. We ate too much , washed down with juice made from the fruit of a nut meg ( you cannot get the fruit back home) delicious. All in all amazing, Pearly was great, 68 years old with great banter and knowledge.

My second class with Pearly and again I had such a great time with her learning Nyonya style of cooking. Each person had their own station and her school is located in a building which has air conditioning, making for a comfortable cooking experience. She first showed us the market where we shopped for ingredients, learned the medicinal properties of various foods and produce, and tried a few snacks to tide us over until we could enjoy the lovely lunch she taught us to make.
